Okay, my account is fine and I can send mail from other machines, so I
know the problem is specific to this machine.

When I first log in I see the console message:  NetISAM:  read failed.
When I launch the CDE mailtool it asks me if I want read only or
read/write access because it is unable to "obtain exclusive access to
this mailbox."  

I passed this on to my sysadmin, but he's busy and stuff, so figured I
could save some time by getting some idea of the cause from you folks.

The CDE Mailer tries to lock your mailbox using ToolTalk. To avoid this
uncheck the "File|Mail Options|Advanced|Use network aware mail file
locking" option.
