Every now and then Sun patch 103796-03 (``Creator 2.5.1: FFB Graphics Patch'',
1996-11-26) puts semi-random dots all over my xterm window on a
Creator workstation when I switch screens (e.g. when I exit `vi').
I'm using Open Windows with defdepth 24.  This problem doesn't occur
with the -02 rev of that patch.

I'd hold off on installing that patch, unless you're a real
_101 Dalmations_ nut.

Not to help your mood, Paul.

I have four Creator's with the patch installed and not experiencing
any of this behavior.  We are using CDE for the window manager.

I've since received a report of a similar problem with CDE.

I also get the problem when running in 8-bit mode.  Then the glitches
are sometimes in color.  In 24-bit mode they're black.

Sometimes I go for quite some time without experiencing the problem;
other times it seems to happen nearly every time I exit `vi'.
It's frustrating, since Sun hasn't reproduced the problem yet.

Well, believe it or not. After posting the reply message below I started
seeing this behaivor.  Always in a xterm and not every time.
I stand corrected.

1. Question on putting host name into title of xterm window

Hi all.  I have a half-dozen or so Solaris machines that I regularly log
into using Reflection X and opening a single xterm window.  This part
works fine, I have the system name displayed in the window title.

I have a collection of little one-liners to open up additional xterms
for display back to my PC once I log in, and I am having trouble getting
the host name to show up in the title.

Here is one of the one-liners:

{jcorn} hqnwis7: % cat yellow
xterm -T $HOSTNAME -ls -sb -fg yellow -bg black -geom 101x35+20+25 &

permissions on file:   -rwxr-xr-x

If I type this exact command at the commandline prompt, it will display
the correct stuff (i.e. "hqsun3", "hqnwis7", etc) in the window title.

If I run this file, however, it doesn't seem to realize that there is
anything in $HOSTNAME, and it displays "-ls" as the title string.

I have tried quoting '$HOSTNAME' and it displays "$HOSTNAME" in the
title, rather than the value of HOSTNAME.  ${HOSTNAME} same behavious as
without the curly braces.

Obviously I have missed something, any useful advice appreciated.  It
would sure make life a bit easier when there are a dozen xterm windows
stacked up on the task bar to have the system name show in the title...

They're all Solaris 8 boxes, if that helps.
