Solaris System Info

Post by hcaco » Thu, 22 Aug 2002 18:07:09

Hi,

I have some questions regarding Solaris. I have developed a program
that records system information (swap/load/...) from a linux box, this
basically reads the /proc file system.

I want to develop something similar for Solaris Machines, neverthless
Solaris (im new to Solaris) doesnt have a /proc file system. Can
someone tell where Solaris puts this information or do i have to make
systems calls to gather all the information??

Thank you,
Hugo

Hi, Hugo!

It's here:

$ uname -a
SunOS star 5.7 Generic_106541-10 sun4m sparc SUNW,SPARCstation-20

$ man -s4 proc
Reformatting page.  Wait... done

File Formats                                              proc(4)

NAME
     proc - /proc, the process file system

DESCRIPTION
     /proc is a file system that provides access to the state  of
     each  process  and light-weight process (lwp) in the system.

etc.

Solaris does have /proc, but it restricts it to it's original intended
usage of "information about processes" and not the free-for-all
everything-but-the-kitchen-sink that Linux has turned it into.
