If you are a gnubie, you should be able to pick up a gnu-cc compiler
(one that is already build for solaris).  Otherwise solaris comes
without a compiler.

I am having no luck "making" anything on this sparc-sun-solaris2.4
machine running Open Windows. Can anyone tell me what

/usr/ucb/cc:  language optional software package not installed
*** Error code 1

means? I am a Unix gnubie and would appreciate any advice.

It means you don't have a C compiler. On Solaris the C compiler is an
optional add-on for megabucks. Most people use the GNU C compiler gcc. You
should be able to find a compiled version for your system. It will
probably not be the latest version but put it up then get and compile the
latest version (then re-compile it with the new version for best results).

That means you purchased Solaris WITHOUT the optional C Compiler.

It came with SunOS ... but at some point in the Solaris history,
they began shipping it as an extra cost option.  About $1,000
worth of extra cost.

BTW, if and when you get it, the program development tools such
as "make" etc. are in /usr/ccs/bin.

If you need an inexpensive C compiler, Walnut Creek CDROM sells
the binaries for GCC on cd-rom for about $40.  You can install
that, download the latest version of GCC from the Net, then
recompile and reinstall the latest.

Walnut Creek can be contacted at http://www.cdrom.com

This may qualify for a FAQ ... surely there are other places to
acquire/purchase GCC binaries for folks not so well-endowed with
money?  Walnut Creek CDROM is the only place I know of, but there
surely ought to be others.  I don't want to give them free
advertising at an unfair advantage to the other vendors.

1. Solaris 8 / cc language optional libraries? Where?

Finally decided to give Solaris 8 a try, and am having a strange
problem. Installed developer cluster, but when I run cc it gives me
the message "cc language optional libraries not installed"?

Anyone know what optional libraries these are, or where I can find
them? I'm shocked Solaris 8 doesn't have a working cc out of the box,
unless I am doing something terribly wrong?

Thanks
