check out /etc/nsswitch.conf.  the problem is probably due to a
get_host_by_addr lookup going through DNS before looking at
files or nis or nisplus...

help: telnet & ftp very slow

I have a new installation of Solaris 2.6 3/98 on a new Ultra5.  The
response time of the telnet and ftp daemons are very slow.  The
connection happens very quick (I'm on a small lan) but it seems that the
daemon is waiting before returning any login data.  Once connected with
either service, response time is good.  This must be a simple setup that
I don't know about.  I am new to the administration side of things as I
have been a mere user for about a year.

Thanks for the help

1. Slow, slow telnet & FTP?

All,

When telnetting or FTPing into a Slackware machine, I'm getting a
very slow response time. i.e. getting back the prompt to login.
Once I get the prompt and go through the login process, response
times seem normal. I've used netscape to browse some pages and
there doesn't seem to be a speed issue on that front...

To see if the telnet daemon was running and actually doing
anything, I started top and then tried to establish a session. I
see the daemon pop up for a few seconds then it disappears. After
about 2 minutes or so, I get the prompt to log into the machine
via the telnet session.

Has anyone seen this before? I installed the NIC after the machine
was built & then went into/etc/rc.d/rc.modules and uncommented the
modprobe line for my NIC (3C905-TX). The inetd.conf already was
set up to start FTP & telnet services already, so I didn't change
any configurations there.

I am guessing that I have missed a step somewhere in installing
the card, but I'm not certain what that step may be. Is there
something else to configuring the NIC or FTP/telnet besides what
I've done? I used netconfig the setup the host name, domain name,
IP address, etc. and they appear to be correct & there are no
apparent (to me) speed issues, other than getting the initial
response from the box when trying to establish a connection.
