New FREE Scripts on Script Archive - Solaris News by the hour too!

Post by jame » Fri, 01 Feb 2002 01:07:17

Hello

New scripts have been added to the Sandyx Systems script Archive -
http://www.sandyxsystems.co.uk/scripts .

You will notice that we have given our first gold award to a Recycle Bin
script by Marty McGowan III, who rose to the challenge set by us here at the
Sandyx Systems Scripts site. Well done, Marty.

Marty is teaming up with us here at Sandyx Systems Script Archive and will
be our new "script editor" and will provide frequent input to the site -
stay tuned.

Also, you will notice that the latest SOLARIS related news is now available
for you to see when you enter the site.  If you would like to see any other
news, e.g. Linux or HP-UX, please get in touch and we will gladly oblige.

Many Thanks

Hmmm, yes.  Don't see anything wrong w/this except:

Doesn't work at all, unless you're root.

If user has /usr/ucb in their path before /usr/bin, it doesn't work at all.

Does something interesting, not quite sure what, with dot files.  Looks like
it doesn't work at all.  Ooooh, no, looks like if you have files "abc" and
".bc" and ask it to:

    % recycle .bc

It does "abc" instead!  Kewl.

Loses your data unless you promise to *always* count to 60 after you use it.

Requires your users to over-write each other's recycle bins (unless they
coordinate and all do the "count to 60" trick out loud!).  Allows them to
freely flush each others' "recycled" data.

If you have files named "foo" and "do_not_remove_foo", and you go:

    % recycle foo

...guess what it does!  :-)

If *that* is a "fantastic", "extremely useful", "gold award", five-star script,
I'd hate to see the the two-star stuff looks like.  Yow.

Jay,

Wouldnt your energy be more useful if it was directed to adding more to the
script - instead of making cheap comments?
Anyone can do that, now, Jay.

If you did get the idea about the site (which you obviously havent), you
will see that these scripts are for you to go on and make your own, better,
bespoke versions.  They merely give you a platform from which to work from.

Its been lovely replying to you, Jay

Have a nice day

It seems as though you know what you are talking about, so make more use of
yourself.

Anyone of the hundreds of thousands of UNIX guys in the world could have
said what you said.  They chose not to because they understand the format of
the site, which is:

1) Take a script from the site
2) Make it better and more workable for your own environment
3) Save yourself embarassment by not posting silly messages on here.

Nice talking, Jay

Cypher

You could never hurt my feelings.

And by the way - its 8000 visitors a week - and definately some are repeat
visitors wouldnt you say?

I love being mocked by you guys - you can call me all the names under the
sun - by doig so, you keep on bringing in visitors for me :-)

So many, many thanks from the moron earning $130,000 a year writing a poor
website and poor posts on here.

Many Thanks

James the moron.

Um, that's a more or less nonsensical statement.

You can count page views, visits, and unique visits.

The only difference between counting visits and unique visits is the
period of time used.

If you are getting 8,000 page views a week, that's a tiny, insignificant
site.

30,000 or so unique visors per month still isn't a very active site-
that's about what I do- it's nothing to really brag about ( you can brag
a little bit if you insist, but its still pretty small potatoes).

I'm not sure if you are a jerk or someone honestly trying to be helpful,
but I'll give the benefit of doubt for the moment and assume the latter.
A piece of advice: trumpeting the wonders of your own site isn't
really good form, and awarding gold stars to second rate scripts is
something you definitely shouldn't be advertising here.

I write scripts and publish them on my site too.  The difference between
us is that I *know* my scripts aren't good, and I say that their only
purpose is to serve as beginning examples of concepts for those who
haven't yet learned the little that I have.

Well, if you are the jackass that I'm sure most people here now think
you are, no doubt you'll have something stupid to say in respoonse.

Why don't you surprise every one instead?

its 8000 visitors, not hits - and yes, it is an insignificant amount.  i was
merely responding to somebody.

i have never said the scripts are excellent - i also state that (and rate)
the scripts are for you to go on and build from - as do you.  So a script
with a 5 rating is rated because it will be easy to build from, not because
its an excellent script as soon as you use it - there is nothing wrong with
that is there?

maybe i do sound and have sounded like a jackass on here, but all i honestly
want to do is to provide a source for UNIX users - but i do keep getting
unfairly treated by some sectors of the UNIX community - not counting you
here - as you seem to be quite honest and open in your response - and so i
respond to defend myself and the site.

I took only a brief glance at the script you rated 5 star and was suprised in
that if people are supposed to build on from your scripts why aren't they
commented since I presume they are for people who don't know how to do it
themselves and so need some kind of skeleton to work with.

Ben

He took time out of his day to point out the many fatal flaws in your
script.  There is someone who should be embarrassed, but it's not the
guy who is pointing out the problems...

That's like a driving teacher telling a student to drive on the wrong
side of the road because he can always get it right later.

Umm, no, that's not quite fair.

Well done scripts often are complicated- hard for a newbie to
understand.  The scripts have to be complicared to take all conditions
into account.

Simple scripts that may well be too flawed for professional use are
often good enough for ad hoc situations where the person using it either
knows that no unusual  circumstances of environment (filenames with
spaces or other special characters, beginning with "-:, that kind of
thing) or usage (never will be used by more than one person at a time,
etc) and can be learning tools for newbies- showing them that a task
can, in fact, be done.

I do agree that giving "gold stars" and the like for any such efforts is
too much, but I also know that I have written utter drek that other
folks have found useful and instructive.

Some of us, perhaps less talented than others, need to walk before we
fly.  And some of us remain earth bound forever.  I think it's both
stupid and in bad taste to brag about amateur efforts, but I don't
necessarily agree that such efforts are always pointless or damaging.
