eth0 and ppp0 can't coexist

eth0 and ppp0 can't coexist

Post by Les » Sun, 01 Feb 1998 04:00:00

I've seen the earlier posts in this newsgroup about ppp and ethernet,
but I still can seem to solve my problem. I don't believe I've set up a
default gateway, but I can't get the two to function together.

If I start a ppp session, it works just fine. If I then try to bring up
eth0, the first ifconfig command generates a "SIOCSIFFLAGS: Try again"
error message.

I can disconnect the ppp, start up the network to my other box, and all
works well (telnet, ping, ftp, etc.), but when I attemp to start a ppp
session, I get a "tcgetattr: I/O error" error message.

Is this still a routing problem? Would it help to see the output of
route or ifconfig? If so, which output, when ppp is up, or when eth0 is
up?

[If it matters, kernel 2.0.33, ppp-2.2.0f-2, 3c503 NIC]

Many thanks for you help,
        Les...

Sounds like an IRQ clash between the modem and the NIC.

1. ppp0 & eth0 can't coexist solved

Thanks all for your  help in trying to solve why my eth0 and ppp0 wouldn't
exist together. I had presumed my newness to networking was causing the
porblem, problem with routes somewhere, but it turned out to be an IRQ
problem. I had discounted that because I hadn't changed any hardware
and the two worked together a month ago.

When I recompiled my newly patched 2.0.33 kernel, I enabled the
SoundBlaster part of my PAS16 soundcard, giving it IRQ 5. The append
line for my ethernet card suggested it use IRQ 5, which then caused it
to autoprobe and choose IRQ 3, which was also assigned to my modem, but
not yet initialized.

TaDa!! Simple solution, but I was looking in the wrong place.

Thanks again,
        Les...
