linux (s.u.s.e) / sgi-irix / nfs / filelocks ?????

Post by Ulf Schlet » Wed, 13 May 1998 04:00:00

hi

i have a big problem.

i installed linux (kernel 2.0.32) as a fileserver for several pc's,
mac's
but in first line some sgi(irix)-machines.

since then we have problems with -compiling -(z)mail -cvs because there
is
no filelocking possible over nfs. (error nmessage 'no locks available')

someone told me that in kernel versions < 2.1 there is no file locking.
so i installed the newest hacker kernel (dangerous!) 2.1.9 but i still
had the same problem (in fact, some more than before:).

isn't there anyone out there who knows and solved the same problem?!

thanks,
ulf

The latest development kernel is 2.1.102, not 2.1.9. BTW, 2.1.102 is
reported broken with APM (compilation problems) and sound (configuration
fails), so I'd stay at 2.1.101 for now. But then again, 2.1.102-1
(pre-patch) has some important fixes for 2.1.101...

1. LINUX/SGI-IRIX NFS performance problems

Hi.

I have a problem with NFS. We have a few SGI Workstations and one Linux
PC
here in the office. All systems are connected using a 100Mbit network.
The
Linux PC has a directory nfs-mounted from an O2 (Irix 6.3) and another
directory nfs-mounted from an O2 (Irix 6.5). If I copy a 8.4 MB file
from
the Irix6.5 O2, then it takes about 2 seconds (which seems to be ok).
However, transfering the same file from the Irix 6.3 O2 takes much
longer
(about 20 seconds).

Does anybody know, what could be the problem?! The Linux box runs a
standard
RedHat 6.1.

Thanks for your help!
