Solaris 8 NIS client to a RedHat 6.2 server - passwd map problems?

Post by Rob Lyl » Wed, 25 Apr 2001 10:01:17

Hello,

I can ypcat all the maps, including the passwd maps on the client.  I can
even su - username and login.  What I can't do is get normal password
authentication to work.  The encrypted field in the passwd map is 34 chars
long on the Linux box, and only 13 chars in a typical /etc/shadow entry
under Solaris.

What am I missing?  I have no "mangled" passwords, or shadow maps to confuse
things.  Domain is bound nicely and everything works except PAM
authentication of a NIS users password.

Jam doughnut to the person who knows what I'm missing!

Cheers,

--Rob.

What does the passwd entry of /etc/nsswitch.conf on the solaris box look like?
There is probably an /etc/nsswitch.nis that could be copied over
/etc/nsswitch.conf to get it working.

Or else you've got that part right and it's something completely different.

You have to be careful with the new versions of Linux.  They use MD5 password
hassing as opposed to the Solaris boxes which use SALT based encryption.  You
will need to convert your Linux box authentication system to use the standard
password hasing rather than the MD5 technique.  At this stage, I don't think
Solaris knows how to decode MD5 passwords.  This will mean that it will be
incapable of honouring direct login requests.

See ya

1. RH 6.2 NYS server 1.3.9 with Solaris 8 NIS client

I can't get the Solaris box to authenticate - passwords aren't mangled, and
no shadow maps involved.  Wassup?

Anyone seen this?  Nowt helpful in the NIS FAQ's or the NIS-Mini-HOWTO.

Cheers,
