Eth1 Died

Eth1 Died

Post by Doug Robert » Fri, 19 May 2000 04:00:00

I am hoping that somebody out there has run into this problem(and me a
rookie at this)...

To begin, both of the installed ethernet cards were working in my SuSE 6.3
firewall/router machine. Eth0 would talk to the net and I could happily do
anything out there I could do with my other Win machines. Eth1 was
initialized and waiting for me to purchase and connect up a hub for the home
network.
I then went and downloaded and installed some updates that SuSE had posted
(Yes, I still have the list of downloaded programs, if that would help).
Once they were installed eth1 was un-initialized and I get these error
messages:

SIOCSIFADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface : No such device
SIOCSIFBRDADDR: No such device
eth1: unknown interface : No such device
SIOCSIFNETMASK: No such device
eth1: unknown interface : No such device

Needless to say eth1 is now non-functioning. Does anyone know what or where
these files/devices are that eth1 needs? I have been looking in almost every
.conf file I can find on the system and cannot find any mention of these 3
devices(?).

Thanks for any help.

try removing those programs first or try booting from a boot
disk and shut off those services

1. eth1 dies every time!

Trying to use Mandrake 7.0
eth0 and eth1 are shown in conf.modules correctly
ipmasq is enabled
ipforward is set=yes
ifconfig -a shows both cards up and running YET

If I reboot the machine, the link light comes on as soon as the md
recovery thread gets woken up, and as the machine restarts, the link
light stays on until the line bringing up eth1 shows OK and then it
dies.  When pinging, all packets get dropped between 192.168.0.1 and
192.168.0.2 both ways.  192.168.0.2 shows a link light.  Link lights and
activity lights are lit on the hub.

this is makin' me
crazy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any suggestions gratefully appreciated
