cp <driver_archive>.tar.gz /usr/src # the usual place for source code is
/usr/src
cd /usr/src
zcat <driver_archive>.tar.gz | tar -xvf # zcat decompresses the gzip
archive to standard out, which we then pipe "|" to tar with -x (expand) -v
(verbose) and -f (file; yes its really getting the data from stdin)
You'll see a stream of file names as it expands out all the files, cd into
the resultant directory and check the README for more details. A few added
notes:
1) with RedHat 7+, the old /usr/src/linux directory is now
/usr/src/linux-2.4, this may confuse the install routine. if it does, ln -s
./linux-2.4 /linux (read up on this magic, its similar to shortcuts, but
they actually work well)
2) you'll have to manually edit the /etc/modules.conf (not sure about
the filename, don't have a linux box handy to confirm it.) change "eth0
eepro" to "eth0 e100" (this tells linux to load the new e100 module in place
of the std eepro module when starting eth0)
Good Luck
