Linux router vs Netopia router on DSL

Wingate is horrible.  Is there a way to setup Linux to route all
ports to the internal network and just setup a firewall to
block 'vistors'?

Or would I be better off getting a HW router.

If I have only one IP address I know I'll have to have a proxy.
But what proxy (not MS Proxy2 for sure) will support multiple
OSs?

ICQ, Half Life and other bizzare ports aren't getting through my
existing proxy server (wingate2).  I would like to configure a
default gateway so that all requests are piped to the linux box.

I just want the closest thing to having my own internet-legal
IP.  Maybe I should just buy an extra one... =/

What you're wanting to do is set up a masqurading firewall, there is plenty
of documentation available on that on linux.com. You'll proberbly want to
set up some sort of named server (well thats what I've done for ease of
admin). And basicly just set up on your windows box the default gateway as
being the linux machine, and the dns to be the linux machine. When set up
this way I've had no hastles connecting up things like IRC and ICQ (though I
had to have a fiddle with the UDP side of things for ICQ)

I hope this offers some sort of assistance, I'll post some more specific
instructions when I have a chance.

Cheers

find a packake called PM firewall, works great here for sharing my cable modem, ip masquerading, IQC works, everything works on the 98 box...

1. DSL/Cable Router vs "Ordinary Router"

What is the difference between a DSL/Cable Router and a standard
router?  I am assuming that both of them have a WAN port(s), or a port
that can be configured for external communication and ports for the
internal network.  It doesn't appear that they are different in any
way.  You need a DSL or Cable modem with Ethernet output to connect to
a so-called DSL/Cable router.  RJ-45 connectors and CAT5 cabling
between the two.  You need ethernet to connect to any other router.
Can someone please explain the differnce?  Is it just a marketing
scheme?

Thanks
Steve
