Hi,
I am trying for sometime to connect to my university slip/ppp
account thru linux on my home computer. I have a barebones dip script; i
have changed the /etc/hosts; i have changed the /etc/resolv.conf files so
that they include the proper hostnames, name servers.
The Linux ver is 1.2.8
The dip ver is 3.3.7n-uri
To make things short:
0) I get this msg:
Local: Unknown server. in the dip script: get local
1) I get a remote IP address
2) I cant use any applications like telnet..
3) Ping localhost works, anything else ... nope
The details are:
The dip script is the same as the sample.dip as in the dip man
pages with changes in the phone number, loginid and passwd.
I am being assigned a dynamic IP address by my ISP; if i type
ifconfig now the output is :
-----------------------------
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Bcast:127.255.255.255 Mask:255.0.0.0
UP BROADCAST LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:2000 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
TX packets:266 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0
sl0 Link encap:VJ Serial Line IP
inet addr:127.0.0.1 P-t-P:128.59.36.65 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP POINTOPOINT RUNNING MTU:296 Metric:1
RX packets:0 errors:0 dropped:0 compressed:0
TX packets:6 errors:0 dropped:0 compressed:0
---------------------------------
I do get a differnt ip address each time. Now if i ping
localhost i get perfect results but if i ping the IP addr(remote host)
^^^^^^^^^ ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
i get:
---------------------------------
PING 128.59.32.156 (128.59.32.156): 56 data bytes
--- 128.59.32.156 ping statistics ---
7 packets transmitted, 0 packets received, 100% packet loss
---------------------------------
I can see the modem rcv and snd lights blinking. If i type ping
the remotehostname i dond get any thing the only msg i get is no such host.
I cant telnet or ftp or any thing!!! Am i doing someythig wrong?
or should i typr something else? One other thing if i put mode PPP in my
dip script, i dont get a connection at all !!!
Sometimes i get Local: Unknown host in the dip scrpt.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
I dont have any program pppd but on bootup i do see PPP Version ...
SLIP Version ....
If any one can inform me about the process of going thru dip, i
woulld be thankful.
Thanks alot for any info,
Gopal.
