PPP 2.2.0e: Now it works; now it don't

(Reposting since I got no answers on this - PLEASE help...)

Hi,

I have a weird problem with PPP. I'm currently running 2.2.0e
on a 1.2.13 kernel, but I had a much earlier version and the
same problem occured there.

The phenomenon is that I'm calling the PPP service with pppd and chat;
in one of two cases (approx.), the connection is completed very nicely.
In the other half of the case, however, the connection hangs after saying:

 pppd[112]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/modem

and nothing happens. Modem off hook (with proper carrier and stuff).
the debug syslog file shows *nothing* (no IPCP, no LCP, nada). I can
append what happens when it *does* work, if that will be of any interest.

I must add here and now, that I'm connecting to a Xyplex server. HOWEVER:

1. I read the doc, and made sure the Xyplex runs a higher level of
   software than the one in question (that would be 5.3.xx).
2. When I boot DOS/Win3.1, and run my Winsock stack of Novell LWP 4.2,
   I get the connection each time (no misses). By the way, I have
   a subjective feeling that it's also a bit faster (but I can't be
   sure there).
3. When it does connect, it works. Pretty well, and no hickups.

From looking at the debug log, I can see that on those occasions where
the connection hangs, no negotiation takes place (at all). This is why
I do not suspect the VJ compression issues.

What's happening?

My /etc/ppp/options has these:

crtscts
defaultroute
passive
noipdefault
debug

Thanks for any help!
