Hi all,


RedHat 6.1? The card works fine under Win95. But under RH, tulip.o cannot
detect the connection. It keeps on failing on the media detection. I
upgraded the driver to 0.91 but no difference.

Any help?

I am attaching a print out of tulip-diag for your reference.

Did you load in and up "pump"???

I think it was needed for those kinds of connections.

Here is a link I have found that has information on most types of NIC
cards and problems with individual card types.

There is a section on the SMC NIC you have and what to do about them.

Hope it is as helpfull for you as it has been for me.

A more difficult question is how to set up the networking to connect

you are totally on your own.  I have a home network of 4 pc's. . . I'd like
to hook the cable modem to the linux box and network the rest.

I'm a complete linux newbie.

suggestions?  (besides quit now. . .)

I did check out the document and used the recommended drivers. I tried both
tye tulip and de4x5 modules and fiddled around with the settings. No luck.

The tulip driver goes as far as making the modem 'PC' light goes on for a
while. It then displays a message about media detection error.

The de4x5 driver makes the 'PC' light blink on and off for 30 sec. or so. It
then dishes out the message 'Media is unconnected, link down or uncompatible
connection.'.

I also tried putting in the DNS and default gateway. That does help either.

Can any one recommend a (very) supported network card, besides NE2000, that
I can buy if I decide to go down that route?

Hi,

I have made some progress towards getting my Linux in the 'net.

When I boot up my computer it gives me the now infamous message
that eth0 initialization failed but when I logged in I can go to
the network configurator and activate eth0 and then I go to the prompt

service.
I do a ifconfig and get a "eth0" answer which gives an incorrect base
address
0x300 rather than the proper one at 0x210.

My questions are how I can I get the system to properly boot and
recognize the
card "eth0" connection.?? And how could I automated the process so I
don't have
to do a "insmod" everytime I get in? Also will the solution properly set
this base
address to the correct one??

I am completely new to Linux and any help will be appreciated.
