I'm trying to get a linux box to talk to an HP 5m printer,
which is connected directly to our little network.
I'm not having much luck.

I get the opposite problem. I am attempting to print remotely to our RS6000 AIX
system. The output arrives at our HPLJ4 but has been converted to Postscript
even though the filter specifically states otherwise and runs ghostscript to
convert it to PCL. I may have to take the filter out just to print plain text.

UNIX is user-friendly.  It's just selective about who its friends are.
