NFS BW-NFS and PC-NFS

NFS BW-NFS and PC-NFS

Post by Tom Glas » Tue, 18 Apr 1995 04:00:00

I am having trouble mounting a file system on my linux box.  I have tried
to use either BW-NFS or PC-NFS on several PC's to mount a machine running
Linux (1.1.18).  I have portmapper running along with mountd , and either
PC-NFS or BW-NFS daemons.

I try to map d: to a file system that is in my exports file and the PC hangs.
Has anyone seen this problem.  I am able to use telnet and ping from these
machines but NFS is not working.

I have seen this indeed, it turned out in my case to be an incorrectly configured
PC/TCP stack on the DOS machine.  Altho, i am using 1.2.5 with the new
NFS-server 2.2 Alpha 3 package.

Try mapping the exported to file system to a drive >= F:.  Drives A-E
are  normally reserved for local drives under DOS, while drives >= F: are
reserved as net work drives.

Drives are drives...DOS isn't intelligent enough, a priori, to make
any distinctions.  The hang is probably due to the RPC request to the
Linux waiting for a response.  It is likely that one or more of
rpc.portmap, rpc.mountd, rpc.nfsd, rpc.ugidd or rpc.pcnfsd aren't
running on the designated server.

1. NFS <=> PC-NFS

Does anyone have experience with PC-NFS? How secure or dangerous is PC_NFS
in relation to NFS? (I know, NFS is not very secure).
Is there somuthing like Secure-PC-NFS?
Are there large (security related) differences between the products of the
different supliers eg. SUNsoft, FTP's PCTCP (confusing name!)?

Thanks in advance,

Bart Jan Kelter
