Do I need Samba ??

Do I need Samba ??

Post by Edd Stanle » Fri, 22 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I would like to know if it is necessary for me to install Samba on my
Linux box in order to connect it with my Windows95 machine on an
ethernet??

I only need to have ftp, telnet, and http connections to the Linux box.
I just wanted to know if this is possible without having to install
Samba
because I have to do all of my installations by diskette (I have no CD
ROM
drive.)

 Thanks!!

No...SAMBA is just to let you see the Linux/Win9x systems like Win9x
p-p networking. I did install Samba, but before that I was able to
share a cable modem connection using wingate. However, you will need
to install an ftpd on the Win machine to get the files...so you may
find Samba (actually a small ap) is a better way to go.

Edd,
RTFM for SAMBA.  Or at least the HOWTO ?? SAMBA is an SMB (server
message block) server for Linux and is only necessary if you want to use your
Linux box to participate in Microsoft Networking.  If all you want is TCP/IP
functionality, you do NOT need SAMBA.

Hi Edd,

if you really want ftp, telnet and http only  you won't need any SAMBA.

SAMBA is necessary, if you want to connect your Linux-Box to the Windows
network functions, like file sharing, printer sharing a.s.o.

Mark,

What manual?  The only thing I can find on SAMBA is the SMB HOWTO which is
pretty spotty.  Is there something more complete?

If I want my Win95 PC to be able to access a printer on a Linux box, do I still
need SAMBA?

Thanks

That would be much easier with SAMBA.  The you can use the standard Win95
network printer facility.

Do I need Samba ??

Post by Mark Anda » Sat, 23 Jan 1999 04:00:00

Like everyone else said. No Samba is definitely not necessary.
What you do want is ip_forwarding

http://www.linuxgazette.com/issue26/kunz.html

Checkout the above url on networking and ip_forwarding it is similar to
what wingate does.
Instead it allows the linux box to be the internet connection for your win
box.
It also talks about setting up your kernel properly as well.

I agree completely the manual or HOW-TO was making my eyes bleed. I needed to get
Linux Network Toolkit by Paul G. SeryISBN: 0764531468 IDG Book Publisher.

It has everything you need to understand Samba from beginners to Corporate Level.

No to do what you need you don't require samba
you can telnet, ftp and http with linux N.P

but if you want to try out SMB then just have a crack at
it, for a small network, it is pretty pointless

unless you have to get to a printer on a Win box
or wanna emulate NT PDC logins
but knowing its there is what makes linux so great

Ed,

You do not need SAMBA unless you wish to share file system resources
or printer resources within the Windows Networking environment.
The protocols "ftp, telnet, http, smtp, ntp, nntp, nfs, pop3, imap"
do not depend on SAMBA.

1. Samba w/ DOS box - what does DOS need?

I am trying to set up my linux box as a file server for my DOS box.
I have installed samba and running it from my linux box seems to
work fine.  The INSTALL.txt file mentions using a file called
'net.exe' on the DOS box.  Where is this program and is there
something that you can use as an alternative?
