Try running an FTP server on the win95 machine (Personal Web Server should
contain ftp)

I have never done it, but I have noticed that the installation method for
RedHat allows you to draw the source from several places. I am pretty sure
one of them is a SMB share. What I would do would be to share your CD-ROM
off you 95 machine and boot the soon to be linux box off the diskettes you
made off the CD (can be done from a command prompt in 95) and tell it to get
the CD from the share on the 95 machine (assuming you have a network card in
the linux box that is natively supported). In theory it should work. As I
said though I have never done a SMB installation. FTP is much faster I
think. :)

The only problem here is the format of the cd. w95 does not see the long
filenames on the cd that is required by the installation programs. You
basically need a linux box to create the files on the win95 machine (chicken
and egg ? ). One way is to find someone with linux installed and loan them
your hard disk with fat installed already. They can mount the drive and
create the directory structure required for you.
This file system can then either be mounted as an smb share or via ftp if
you can run an ftp server on your win95 box. I think that there is one
available free for download from microsoft.com (personal webserver - which
also comes with frontpage 97/98)

Hope this helps
Terry

Installing RH5.1 from a win95 machine

If you have enough drive space, and if you run fat16 then xcopy the redhat
directory and rawrite as well as the  2  boot images from the cd to your
win95 drive. Use fips to free up and create a free partition if you dont
already have one. The create the boot disks using rawrite and the images
you copied from the cd. Boot with the linux diskettes and choose "install
from hard drive" when prompted by menu's. Point the
source to /redhat on the dos drive and it will do the installation.

Good Luck .... Bertie

1. Installing RH5.0 on new machine, install crashed!

I have a new machine, a Dell P2/300.  NT4.0 is already installed on it in a 2GB
FAT16 partition.  The HD is 14.4GB total.

When I start up RH5.0 install, the disk partitioner reports only 8GB of
available disk space.  I've heard that there's a problem with Linux and drives
bigger than 8GB.  Can it use them still if it's installed within the first 8GB
or not?

I set up a 2GB partition and a 64MB swap partition and proceed with the install.
It gets through installing the packages etc., about 90% done, then says
something like this:

System error 7; install failed
sending termination signals...
you may now reboot safely.

Any idea what the problem might be?

Shade and sweet water,
Brian
