CHALLENGE: partial internet connectivity under linux where as win98 gives full connectivity on same machine

Post by Vishal Gup » Tue, 19 Aug 2003 01:29:02

i access internet using lan(via cable net). i have windows 98 and
linux red hat 7.3 installed. While i can surf any website and use
yahoo messenger in windows 98, i cannot surf most of the sites in
linux and cannot use yahoo messenger. Only some sites like google.com
can be accessed by both linux and windows.I can get my mails using
email client in both linux and windows properly.

On analying TCP Dumps , i figured out that my machine sends TCP Reset
often..in linux while in windows it sends it rarely . In general
internet connection under  window is good while under linux is
pathetic!!!

To download these tcpdumps pls visit
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BNPGs/files/   and dont forget to read
the "readme_first.html"

What to do so that i get same internet connectivity in linux as i get
in windows?

Before suggestion solutions, pls have a look at the number of
solutions already proposed by many networking experts and still the
problem remains. So its a challenge for the real expert.

Configure it correctly. :)

You CAN expect Windows to do better on cheap hardware. The hardware was
built with that in mind. The Windows driver writer had full access to
the hardware specifications and was able to take advantage of Windows
quirks. Often Linux is more demanding of the hardware (in that it won't
overlook hardware bugs as Windows might.)

That said, it must be noted that a lot of people have used RTL-8139's in
Linux for a long time.

I think it would be child's play for a "real expert" with hands-on the
machine.

There's a ton of information. I bet the answer is there already; you
simply have not seen it yet. Did you try the running the diagnostic with
the interface disabled? ("ifconfig eth0 down")

RTL-8139's have several different drivers. I don't run any of those
myself, but you could try using the other drivers. You're using 8139too;
the old one was rtl8139. I think there's yet another driver, too. I do
not know the whole story or 8139's, but I'll bet that one reason for the
many drivers for one network chipset is that the hardware is cheap and
shoddy, as described above. I do know that 8139's and tulips tend to
dominate the low end of the price spectrum.

You've been to scyld.com already. Don Becker is a "real expert", far
above anyone you will find here or at your Web forum. He has probably
posted your solution to the RTL-8139 mailing list numerous times over.
Look again.

I don't mind doing that, but you should use the appropriate header.
("Mail-Copies-To:", I think.)

1. WIN98-LINUX connectivity

HI all,

I have two computers  - compA and compB - in aan simple Ethernet network
(bus toplogy, coax cable).
On compA is running linux only
On compB is running WIN 98 only.

I think it must be possible to run on compB linux (i.e. making a connection
from compB (the client) with compA (the server), so that I can run on compB
also linux).

So, can anyone give me which steps I have tot do for an successful
connection, and which client-server software is available or which
client-server I have to install for this connection?

Thanks,
Rudy
