Post by jeffbr.. » Tue, 18 May 1999 04:00:00

modem using IP Masq and it works great with only
one problem(so far).

I cannot send or receive e-mail from my WIN95 box
using the mail settings provided by Cox. I can use
netmail.home.com to download e-mail but am still
unable to send e-mail. It appears that I am unable

linux server. I am able to send and receive e-mail
from the Linux box however.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Jeff

E-mail from Win 95 through Linux Server...

Since you have not stated it I assume that you are using the defauly out the
box sendmail as you mail server. Does the linux server not respond to the
win95 mail client with a " we do not relay" or some such error. This just
means unless you are connected to linux locally , sendmail will not forward
your mail to your ISP. Just add the line
192.168.  ( or whatever subnet you are using - nb: don't forget the cr at
eol)
to /etc/mail/ip_allow
This will allow all non-local clients with ip addresses 192.168.*.* to use
sendmail as an smtp-router

ps: The reason your win95 clients can receive e-mail is because they are
using the pppd daemon , not the sendmail server.

E-mail from Win 95 through Linux Server...

Post by jeffbr.. » Thu, 20 May 1999 04:00:00

I solved my own problem and while I am not sure if anyone is interested
thought that I would post the solution.

for their mail server specifying only that "mail" be used for both the
incoming(POP3)and outgoing(SMTP)servers. Machines connected directly to
the cable modem are able to get the full name by executing:

"ping mail"

The entire server name will be shown. If this name is entered  in the
appropriate fields of the e-mail program being used for both the
incoming and outgoing mail server it works.

1. Routing Win 95 thru Linux w/ISDN and Ethernet

Hello to all:

First, I'd like to thank those who responded to my previous posts.   My
Linux box is now back up and running fine and on the net.

Now, my last problem (I think) is to get my Win 95 PC routing back through
my linux box onto the net.

My setup:

- Win 95 PC with Ethernet card

- Linux box with Ethernet card and external ISDN terminal adapter on com
port

- Minihub between Win 95 and linux PCs.

I am running Caldera Openlinux 1.1 with the default kernel of 2.0.29.

I am now able to also telnet from my Win 95 PC into my Linux box, but
cannot get out to the rest of the net.   My Linux box, as mentioned above,
is doing just fine on the net.

What HOWTO and/or FAQ do I need to read, or configuration change should I
make on my Linuxbox to permit my 95 PC to route through it onto the
Internet?

Thanks much in advance.
