PLEASE HELP LINUX WITH MEDIAONE NE

Post by Nizzar » Fri, 14 Jul 2000 04:00:00

i have a huge problem which needs to be solved.
I just installed Red Hat Linux 6.2 on a new hard drive.
I also have Mediaone internet.  Now, Ive previous versions of Linux  (6.0
and 6.1)
and  i never upgraded...when ever i got a new version, i always did a clean
install...and it ALWAYS worked right out of the box....i NEVER had to
configure my ethernet card. It always pulled an IP from the cable modem on
boot up...i never had to do anything. Then I stopped using it for a while.
Now, today, i installed 6.2 on a new hard drive, I did everything the same
when i installed it, but now on boot up.. it says it cant determain an IP
address on eth0  (my ethernet card..theres only 1 in my computer)  What the
hell do i do?!
Ive read some other posts,  and some have suggested that its the fault of
the  PUMP package...but its not so in my case, cause its always worked
before (in 6.1)
What the hell DO I DO!?
i need to use linux....I HATE THIS WINDOWS CRAP!!!!
I dont think i need a login script for Mediaone NE..... ive never needed one
before..
Some one please help me.... im desperate!!!

i've two problems here,
i dont know mediaone,
and i dont use rh.
i can only suggest you look at your network configuration really
thoroughly.
maybe rh changed some default settings in their distributions.
i *think* the tool is linuxconf.

make sure your card is configured,
make sure its initialized at bootup,
and i *think* youd have to set it to dhcp.
one would expect it to broadcast a request and get a reply from mediaone
side.

you might have to telephone their hotline,
maybe they'd be willing to have a look at some logs,
see if your nics request ever got there, and if it was handled.

might try tcpdump, also, see if you get any traffic (requests and
reply).
