ftp and telnet connections rejected

Hello.

I have 3 machines running Linux/WFWG/Win95 on an ethernet. I used to be
able to ftp, telnet, rsh and finger the Linux machines but not any more.

I've recently installed ppp on one machine and completed kernel rebuilds
to 2.0.30 and almost got printing to work consistently. Samba is
functioning and I can access files from the Linux machines through
Windows. Ping works fine by name or IP number.
When I try to ftp, telnet, etc this happens:

transcript from an xterm on moonbase:

Quote:>ftp jupiter

Connected to jupiter.gpv.co.nz
421 Service not available, remote server has closed connection
ftp>
..................................

extract from /var/log/secure on jupiter:

Aug 28 12:34:46 jupiter in.ftpd[233]: warning: can't verify hostname:
gethostbyname(moonbase.gpv.co.nz) failed
Aug 28 12:34:46 jupiter in.ftpd[233]: refused connect from 192.168.10.20
...................................

I've read enough howto's , FAQs and man pages to send me crazy!

What do I need to do to get these machines to behave again?

Thanks for any good ideas.

Regards,
Graham

1. named causes system to reject telnet of ftp

if i run named, anyone with an entry in named.hosts (like me) get rejected if i
try to telnet or ftp to the server.

if i kill the named process, everything works fine.

yes, i already checked hosts.deny.
