Yes to most/all of the above.
Moved to Netscape 3.xGold.Silver&Bronze (on Win95)
Changed Win95 DNS references to closest ones I could find.
Moved to RH 3.0.3 w/kernel 2.0.13 + all known bells & whistles.
Now everything works as I'd like it to work!
In the process I "seem" to have learned that following/setting up
the cache.DNS on the Linux box (per RH/DNS-how-to) works fine on the
Linux side but is not passed to the Win95 box for some reason....
probably because I haven't masqueraded the "localhost" DNS config
per the how-to.
It doesn't seem to be necessary, although for the sake of what works
discussions, it might be worthwhile to look at it. Ping can see the
127.0.0.1 from Win95...but putting that first in the Win95 DNS listing
actually seems to slow it down. What this tells me is that regardless
of what you have resolving on the Linux host, Win95 will use its own
settings. Perhaps if you have none (which I haven't tried) it might
use the Linux host...I just haven't spent all the time and reboots
necessary to step through all the possibilities.
Anyway...what works is:
IP masquerade of course w/specific pointer to the Win95 box.
plus
Win95 set to one or two DNS sites specified best by the ISP.
Linux connecting with CSLIP
Your mileage may vary. This seems to provide a reasonably (as possible)
simple setup with nearly as good of performance as I can sense by having
the Win95 box handling the modem directly to the ISP.
It's truly a giant step in the Linux world and in this case is going to
provide a living/working example to 8th grade computer students how some
good things in life can be enjoyed without paying MS for everything!
Thanks to all who commented/helped off-line.
