Config US Robotics Winmodem 28.8/33.6 for SLIP service ...

Hi All,

Has any one succeeded in configuring US Robotics Sportstor Winmodem 28.8/33.6
to work under Linux and SLIP?  My old script for a 14.4 modem no longer works
with the new modem.  Any tips or hints are welcome.

Take it back and get a real modem! Not to be rude, but winmodems only
work for windows with it's own little software that does the work. I hear
it can take some real CPU overhead also. I'm suer many people can back me
up here.

Definatly.  In factd, when I went to buy my Sportster 33.6k the guy at
the store asked me if I wanted a Winmodem or a real modem. :)  What I
heard was that the Winmodem isn't actually a COM port like
"normal" modems (/dev/ttyS* cua*),
meaning that unless you have very special software (ie USRs special
windoze drivers), you can't access it at all.  Kinda like having an
external modem and not having a port to plug the cable into I guess.
Anyway, I'm now the proud owner of a Sportster 33.6, and it works great
with Linux (I'm using it to write this).  WOrks great with IP Masquerading
so I can use the other computer (windoze 3.11) to access Internet stuff.

later,
-jon

Wow!  A computer store clerk that was actually aware of this difference!  Around
here it is hard to find a computer store where they have ever heard of any OS
other than Dos, Windows (various versions) on Intel and Mac OS on Macs.

You went to a good store.

1. Help: Internal US Robotics Sportster Winmodem 33.6

Hello,

I am running Linux - kernel version 2.0.3 (SuSE 5.0, June 1997) - and want
to use my
internal US Robotics Sportster Winmodem 33.6 (I have no manual for it).

Examining the settings under Win95 I get the following:

 - COM2
 - Interrupt 3
 - Adress $110
 - UART NS 16550AN

Under Linux I have a link '/dev/modem' to '/dev/ttyS1'. I tried to dialout
using MINICOM
and TERMITE, but TERMITE says it is unable to open the device. MINICOM
'initializes' the
modem but does not dial (no error messages).

I already asked someone: The modem uses Windows GDI functions. But using
HYPERTERM under
Win95 I can type AT Hayes commands.

Can anyone help?

Thanks,

        J. Melchert

(Please excuse my bad english.)
