Dip, SLIP and sl0

Dip, SLIP and sl0

Post by Andy Higgin » Thu, 17 Aug 1995 04:00:00

Hi,

I'm trying to configure my Linux 1.2.8 to connect to a service
provider via CSLIP.  I am using dip 3.3.7 and I execute the
following:

dip -t -v

Quote:>port cua1
>speed 57600
>term

atdt5555555
''...enable slip mode ...''
System says..Your IP address is 20X.XXX.XXX.XXX

'Cntrl+]'

Quote:>get $locip 20X.xxx.xxx.xxx
>get $rmtip 20x.xxx.xxx.yyy
>default
>mode CSLIP

When I do a ifconfig..there is no sl0 device.   How can I add
this?  Do I need to recompile the kernel?? Can I add something
to lilo's append statement? Should dip automatically create the
sl0 device?

Thanks in Advance
Any help would be appreciated.

Simply - by making sure:
        - your DIP is relatively updated (3.3.7n-uri comes
          to mind :-);
        - your DIP is set-uid root;
        - "ifconfig" and "route" are located exactly where
          "pathnames.h" in DIP source dir thinks they are.

No, unless it's not configured with SLIP/CSLIP enabled.

Quote:>Should dip automatically create the sl0 device?

Depends. In 1.3.20 it does, in 1.2.8 - I doubt. Looks like
you do need to recompile your kernel (after reconfiguring
it to enable SLIP/CSLIP).

1. DIP and sl0 interface

I admit, you got me.  I must admit that I didn't make the binary SUID.

I *did* apoligize in advance.
