3com 3c905-TX card and RH 7.1: could it be firewall settings?

Post by Mayor Curle » Wed, 18 Jul 2001 07:02:44

Hi, everyone:

I am having trouble with Linux RedHat 7.1 and my 3com 3c905-TX NIC card.  I
am using DHCP to recognize the card and chose NO firewall options at
installation.  This card was once visible with RedHat 7.0.

The main difference in installation was the firewall options in 7.1.
However, I chose no firewall.  (I connect to the network through a proxy
server.)

I can see the driver in my /etc/modules.conf file..........

alias eth0 3c59x

I saw the module when I ran /sbin/lsmod

3c59x 0 (auto-clean)

Is there any additional troubleshooting I could go through?

any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
John Curley

is your eth0 showing up on ifconfig?

if not try

# ifconfig eth0 up

any errors when booting up?

Looks like the module has been loaded automatically but is unused. You
simply do not have your network running.

try "ifconfig" and the RedHat network start scripts (should be in
/etc/init.d/*) to configure it. Should be usable afterwards...

When I ran ifconfig (with no arguments), eth0 did not show up.

Then I ran ifconfig eth0 up.  Which did not produce any errors.

Then when I ran ifconfig, it did show eth0.

However, when I tried to ping some other server, it said that I was
attempting to ping FROM address 0.0.0.0.

I think this is because I need to use DHCP to obtain a dynamic address.

Do you know how to bring up eth0 with dhcp?

Thanks,
John

If you are using Redhat then you will probably want to alter the
/etc/sysconfig/ifcfg-eth0 file and add a line to say something like:

BOOTPROTO=bootp or BOOTPROTO=dhcp

See ya

1. RH 7.1, 3com 3c905-TX NIC, and DHCP don't work

Hi,

I am running RedHat 7.1 and trying to get a 3com 3c905-TXM NIC card on the
network.  I am using DHCP and the network IS up and running.  The card is
working, lights are flashing, and this card was just used with RedHat 7.0.

Settings are appropriate in ifcfg-eth0 (BOOTPROTO="dhcp")

Module is shown loaded with lsmod (3c59x)

Tried to activate card with "ifconfig eth0 up".  eth0 shows up with
subsequent listings with "ifconfig", but has no IP address assigned to it.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks,
John Curley
