I am sure that a visit to Deja News would have turned up at least 10
answers to this FAQ. The Linux box is doing a reverse name lookup on the
machine tryiong to connect. There a quite a few ways of getting around
this depending on the particulars of your setup. But I would start with
resolve.conf entry order hosts, bind and add the hosts accessing the box
to the hosts file. In most implementations this is feasable.

FYI

I don't have a fix, but I am experiencing the same problem.  When trying to
telnet to my Linux box it takes 30 secs to a minute; however, if i use the
Linux box to telnet itself, or another destination, it works just fine.

HELP: telnet/ftp takes a long time to stablish connection

Post by Phillip Gersekowsk » Sun, 22 Nov 1998 04:00:00

This problem  is somethime caused when you do not have the ipaddresses and
host names of the machine attempting to telnet of ftp to your linux box
listed in /etc/hosts on the linux box. Alternatively your can setup a local
DNS to resolve the names of these machines, and ensure that the reverse
lookup is operational.

The problem is caused because the telnet and ftp daemons are attempting to
resolve the ip address of the calling machine to a host name for entries
they ( the daemons) generate in system log files. The time lag is due to the
reverse name resolution not being successful ( there is no way to reverse
resolve the named) and the telnet and ftp daemons waiting until the attempt
to reverse resolve the names times out.

The same problems will be experienced attempting to retreive mail with pop3
or send mail with sendmail in these senarios.

1. LAN (telnet) connection takes LONG time to login!

Hi,

I have two computers LAN, with RED 5.1 (2.0.38) and win98. Both network
cards is 3Com509B.
Problem is, that my telnet connection takes over one minute before receiving
login sequence.
My win98 telnet program seems to connect very well, but nothing happens at
long time. After I get login prompt and when I login, all systems works
quite well.
In Linux machine telnet login to localhost is instant. As well win98
machines Netscape will find my Linux Apache server immediatly.
Also sending mail to localhost in Linux machine takes exactly same time
(over minute.)
What's wrong? I'm still quite newbie in Linux, but please help, because I
want to continue using my Linux...

Regards,
Jani Eskeli
