Actually, in DIP there's this dial command and no ATD? string.  I would
have tried
that!  And of course on most modems you can't set a switch to use tone
by default.

Which dial-sequence are you using in your dip-script?

It depends on the AT sequences that your Modem needs to
dial-up with tone-dialing. Therefore you have to look at
your modem manual.

   If you can't get DIP to include the "D" for the "ATD" string, you
can force the modem to use tone dialling by doing an "ATT&W". This
should force Tone mode, then Write the config to the modem's NVRAM.

   This should survive power cycles and modem resets, unless the
modem is reset to factory defaults via an "AT&F".
