plip & ipconfig Pointtopoint

plip & ipconfig Pointtopoint

Post by Michael Reppisc » Tue, 28 Nov 2000 04:00:00

hi,

i have problems configuring plip on my machine.
i
# insmod plip
get something like this: net3 plip v 2.2 paralell port at 0x378,using
irq 7

so far so good. (works like in the book)

now i try to bring it up & running (not connected the cable)

# ifconfig plip1 192.168.2.1 pointtopoint 192.168.2.99 up
and get pointtopoint:hostname lookup failiure

seems the ifconfig does not understand about the poionttopoint flag
(have tried with leding '-', same)

i can assign a ip-address with  ifconfig plip1 192.168.2.1 up

what is wrong?
i tried this on a 2.0.39 kernel and a 2.2.x kernel.

plip & ipconfig Pointtopoint

I've never used plip, but the docs I have use "pointopoint"
not "pointtopoint" (note single 't' in middle) ... must have
caused eons of frustation time .

Cheers,

The 't' was in fact to much.

1. plip: "pointtopoint: Unknown host"

Hello world,

I've been trying to install RH 6.2 on a CD-less laptop, I've been working
through the HOWTO
http://www.redhat.com/mirrors/LDP/HOWTO/PLIP-Install-HOWTO-11.html
Now, I have plip loaded in memory, peeking in /var/log/messages shows that
plip0 is using the irq I've requested, and everything that I can think of to
examine under /proc seems peachy.

but I can't seem to configure the interface, the line:
ifconfig plip0 my.ip.address.here pointtopoint another.ip address.here netmask 255.255.255.255 up
command fails with
pointtopoint: Unknown host

the other ip address is from the same subnet as me (a machine i've gone and turned off)
I'm using my real ip for my.ip.address.here.  I'm stumped.  What gives?

Many thanks for tips
-P.
