Mac/PC/Linux connectivity?

Post by J. David Eisenber » Wed, 11 Nov 1998 04:00:00

Pardon the clueless newbie-ness of this question:

A friend of mine currently has two or three PCs and a
Macintosh networked together.  He's using software from
some big company in Redmond <uch> and can access any file
on the Mac or PC from any of the other machines.

He would love to use Linux, but he needs this capability.
Does it exist, and if so, is it difficult to implement?

(Sorry, I've never used Linux, but I did buy Red Hat 5.2
recently and am eagerly awaiting its arrival in the next
few days.)

Hi,

It should say it's not very easy to install the required setup as you
requested. I have this setup at home right now. Actually the RH 5.2 CDs
can do all the stuff you need. Only thing you may need to do is to grab
the documentation from various website. Usually the greatest site is
http://sunsite.unc.edu/mdw/, there are a lot of documentation for the
setup:

For PC /Windoze networking in Linux, you need to look at Samba doc,
for Mac networking in Linux, you need Netatalk, which is available in
http://thehamptons.com/anders/netatalk/ . And rest of it depends on your
friend's requirement, he can setup fileserver, print server, fax server,
mail server etc....

I have a similar set-up at home (1 Linux box, 1 Windoze PC, 2 Macs on a
10BaseT ethernet) and use the Linux PC as file, print and Internet server
for the rest of the machines. (You need "samba", "netatalk+asun", and "IP
Masquerading" for these tasks. All programs were included in my SuSE Linux
5.3 distribution.)

Everything works without problems now and I was able to install the stuff
within a few days although I'm also a complete Linux newbie.

I can send you my configuration files if you want.

See ya,
Edi.

I know that *I'd* like a gander at them, if you don't mind :-)

As would I.

1. Linux and Mac/PC connectivity

I'm trying to set up a Linux machine with ability to share files with Macs &
Windows 9x PCs (everything being all plugged together over ethernet). This
is less a server situation, and more a client situation .. The machine needs
to be able to access files that are stored on some of our already existing
Windows & Mac servers, and doesn't really need to be able to be accessed by
any other computers on the network, although it wouldn't hurt.

Ideally, I'd like to install some program on the Mac or PC, that would let
the linux machine be able to access them. Does it work this way, or do have
to load something on the linux system?

So far, I find that netatalk and samba seem to be the only real options for
any kind of mac & pc file sharing ..  are there others? If so, do they work
better or worse?

(we're using RedHat, btw)

Cheers,

Seth
