Hello and thanks

A few weeks ago I had an Problem to ping to other Computer in my
LinuX network.

I got many E-Mail-Helps.

The Problem were solved by:

Setting other IP Address.

First

2 Computer Network:
a) voyager      IP 192.168.0.1
b) enterprise   IP 192.169.1.1      don't work (only ping localhost)

Second

a) voyager      IP 192.168.0.1
b) enterprise   IP 192.168.0.2      it works without any problems.

I'dont know exactly wy, but it works.

If there is anyone outthere who knows why the first IP adress work an the
second not, please Mail me!

  Thanks in andvance

These are on two *different* IP subnets; as 192.*.*.* is a block of
class Cs, the default netmask will be 255.255.255.0, which makes
192.168.0.0 & 192.168.1.0 different subnets. So they won't be able to
reach each other without a router in between, which you don't have.

Yep, now they are on the same subnet (192.168.0.0) and will be able to
talk to each other without a router.

Perhaps you should try to get hold of 'The Linux Network Administrators
Guide' (part of the Linux Documentation Project) and read that
carefully. It'll make clear why the first didn't work, and the second
did.

1. SAMBA PROBLEM SOLVED. THANKS FOR THE HELP.

To all those many that helped me figure this bug out. Thanks for the
help. Your efforts let me know I was not alone. It is a pity Red Hat
rushed this version out the door though... And I am sorry to say...

Nothing that was suggested helped to cure the Red Hat 6.1 blues. Here is
how I did it.
Custom Install of Red Hat 6.0 so that I can partition my hard disks so
that hdb shows up...
Configure Samba and get it working under 6.0...
Upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1.
Other 6.1 glitches I have worked around include the dropping eSound
driver. I went to prefs in XMMS and selected the OSS driver instead.
Now if only I could figure out how to launch Star Office from GNOME I
would be doing great!
Again thanks for the input on this matter. Even though it didn't work
real well you folks kept me from going crazy trying to configure this
thing out.
Dave.
