Shutting down eth0 hangs machine

Shutting down eth0 hangs machine

Post by Charles Berge » Wed, 08 Nov 2000 04:00:00

Hi,

I am running SuSE 6.4 (kernel version 2.2.14-SMP) with a 3COM
3c905C-TX-M network card as eth0.  The card works fine except when
shutting the machine down the machine hangs when it attepts to stop
eth0, forcing me to reset.  The same symptom occurs when I try the
command ifconfig eth0 down. There do not appear to be any messages in
the system log about this.

So, I thought I would try to upgrade the driver and see if that fixed
the problem.  I've downloaded and run the compile_SMP script to build
the new module.  When I run the install3c90x script to install the
module, I get the following error:

Attempting to install the 2.2.14-SMP version of the 3c90x
driver module.
You are running the 2.2.14-SMP version of kernel release...
The 3c90x driver module was not built for this kernel release.
You will need to compile the driver yourself.
Installation of 3c90x driver module failed.

My questions are:

1) does anyone know what is causing the machine to lock up?
2) can anyone tell me how to build the driver for my kernel release?

Cheers,

Charles Berger

You don't describe your hardware, but I believe the SMP implies you
are using a multi-processing kernel.  Do you have more than one
processor in your machine?  If not, that may explain both the lockup &
the compile problems.
