I am trying to figure out what is causing the ppp connection on my Linux
box to occasionally just stall or hang. I leave my machine on pretty
much
all the time, running Linux 2.2.14.-5.0.14b with a 56k internal
modem logged into my ISP almost all the time.
Most of the time my connection is flawless, but occasionally --
more often recently -- I notice that suddenly my connection just hangs.
I
can't ftp, ping, telnet or anything. If I call the number of my second
phone line, the line is busy, indicating the modem is still connected.
If
I kill my ppp connection and restart, I can telnet and ping again, no
problem.
How do I debug such a thing to figure out what is happening? There is
nothing that I can discern from my log files. Is this a modem problem? I
can't understand why this would be so since I do not physically turn the
modem off, just restart ppp and the machine stays on. Is this an ISP
connection problem? How would I find this out? Or do I have a
configuration or other software problem with my machine?
Any help appreciated. Please email reply as well.
