Sendmail+DNS problem: Host Name Lookup Failure

Sendmail+DNS problem: Host Name Lookup Failure

Post by <sha.. » Thu, 20 Jan 2000 04:00:00

I am trying to setup an intranet in which Email servers running on
Red Hat 6.0 are situated in different cities and are connected thru
leased lines. Each server offers ppp dial-up connectivity to hosts
running Windows95/98/NT.

Now the problem is that i think DNS is working fine as nslookup is giving
correct results. but sendmail is not relaying email. the error i get in the
/var/log/maillog file is:

...."Stat-Deferred ..Host Name Lookup Failure"

The root account gets email telling him of 'Local Configuration Error..'

Please help me out here...will installing qmail instead of sendmail resolve
the problem....??

How do I configure sendmail not to use DNS?

http://www.sendmail.org/faq/section4.html#4.5
How can I solve "MX list for hostname points back to hostname"
and "config error: mail loops back to myself" messages?

1. Sendmail 8.7.5 and Linux 2.0.20 (host name lookup failure)

Hi,

I'am Massimiliano Panichi. I have a problem
with my sendmail deamon. I have a private
LAN, with no access to Internet. When I try to
send an e-mail message to another user on
another host in the LAN, the deamon doesn't work.
It give me an error. HOST NAME LOOKUP FAILURE.

I don't understand this error message because the
computer have all the host information in the
local /etc/hosts file. It try a DNS server to lookup the name
and it don't receive answer because it doesn' t exist. After
this it should see in the /etc/hosts file to find the
IP address. I use Linux 2.0.20 and Sendmail 8.7.5.

Please help me!

Massimiliano
