serial port on Thinkpad?

Post by Reuben Pasqui » Fri, 08 May 1998 04:00:00

Hello!

I'm trying to connect my Thinkpad to an old 486 with a serial line so
I can do some simple 2 processor distributed computing experiments.
Unfortunately, Linux can't seem to send/recv any info from the Thinkpad's
(365XD) serial port.  Does anyone have any suggestions as to what
the problem may be?  Does the Thinkpad serial port use a weird IRQ
or port address?

Thanks!
Reuben

1. serial port on IBM ThinkPad

On boot up, Linux detects the serial port of my IBM ThinkPad 755CX as
follows:

serial driver version 4.13 with no serial options enabled
tty00 at 0x03f8 (irq = 4) is a 16550A

On the other hand, when I do a 'ls /dev/tty00', the device doesn't
exist at all.
I tried to setup my external modem (USR modem that I know to work with
Linux -it works on my Desktop PC) on /dev/modem after I linked it to
/dev/tty00 (after I created it using mknod), /dev/cua0  and /dev/ttyS0
with no sucess at all. The modem just doesn't respond.
I also tried using the device name instead of /dev/modem and got
nothing.

Any ideas? I'm using Slackware 3.6 kernel 2.0.35

I've decided to face reality... just let me know when
it gets better...
