Beginners Modem Question

Post by Brett Weave » Fri, 27 Mar 1998 04:00:00

I am attempting to set up my modem in linux red hat 5 and I can't even
pass the first hurdle.  I look in my /dev directory and I see no modem
device.  Can anybody tell me how I can fix this.  Thanx

Obtain a copy of the Serial HOWTO and read it.

Roughly you are looking for /dev/ttyS[0123]
COM1 --> /dev/ttyS0

Make a link such as (cd /dev; ln -s ttyS0 modem)

However, you should be aware of file locking problems if one
program us using /dev/modem and another wants to use /dev/ttyS0.

ln -s /dev/cuaX /dev/modem

Where X is 0 for com1, 1 for com2 etc.

1. Forget all references to /dev/modem.  Use /dev/ttyS? instead.

2. Do not use /dev/cua?  Use /dev/ttyS? instead.

Get my 'serial_suite.tgz' via ftp from 'scicom.alphacdc.com'.  You
must use your full e-mail address as the password when logging in as

In the 'serial_suite' are blurbs which explain why '/dev/modem' and
'/dev/cua&' should not be used.  There are also blurbs about setting
up modems on Linux, about configuring the HDB uucp files.

There are also some simple programs which replace the getty to provide
call up logins on your machine, to establish a ppp connection etc.
