Connecting two remote offices with Linux?

Connecting two remote offices with Linux?

Post by Brad Bate » Fri, 30 Jul 1999 04:00:00

We have two offices that each have a DSL connection.  I would need to
connect them together over the internet.  I would like to do this using
Linux.  The two offices need to use the same database (Ms Access), there
will only be about ten people, at most using the database at one time.

I am very new to Linux and would appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Brad

A few questions.

Can the ADSL be "always up", or do you pay for traffic?
Is security an issue?
Do you have "real" IP numbers, or will you use the "private range" (also
called 'dark') IP's?

1. EQL and 3COM Office Connect Remote: anyone using it?

I'm hoping to use the MLPPP feature of the 3com's dual analog modems to
connect to my Linux Server.

I have PPP configured and running on the Server, and I'm able to dial in
with a single line of the 3com. Next step is to dial in with the other
line/modem to another ppp port on the Linux server.

If anyone has some advice/hints on how to configure the EQL on Linux it'd be
much appreciated as this is new territory for me. I do have the kernel
compiled with EQL turned on, but now what?

Reading the docs brings up the questions of IP's. Do the PPP connections
stay as if they are single line PPP connections and the change is to
routing?

Would the ip-up command be used to add the eql_enslave commands as the ppp
links come up?

Am I right in the way I understand this:
ifconfig eql x.x.x.x mtu 1500 would go into the rc.local and x.x.x.x. would
be a valid IP on our class C?
eql_enslave would add the ppp links to the eql IP via the ip-up script?

Any help/suggestions greatly appreciated.

TIA - Heinz
