A PatCHiE server - "change-passwd"

Hello:

I'm running Linux 1.3.20 (Slackware 3.0) with APACHE 1.0.  I'm trying to
get the change-passwd script provided in APACHE's to work, but am having
problems:

- I am assuming the change-passwd script actually changes the /etc/passwd
file, which is what I want.  Is this correct?
- I need to get user authentication going on the server, apparently, but
the information pointed in the docs,
(http://wintermute.ncsa.uiuc.edu:8080/auth-tutorial/tutorial.html) can't
be accessed because wintermute apparently had a bad disk crash lately.

Any pointers to more information on this?  I looked all through
apache.org but didn't find anything about this subject.

Thanks...
