IP address for connecting into LRA through ppp

IP address for connecting into LRA through ppp

Post by Ruibing Ha » Fri, 15 Oct 1999 04:00:00

Dear all,

I am trying to connect my linux box into Internet through PPP.
My linux box also has a local Ethernet.
Following is the configuration:

              | Local Ethernet
              | eth0,192.168.0.3
        ----------------
        |               |ppp0
        |   linux box   |----------> PPP server
        |---------------|

I did not specify any IP address for the ppp interface, so when I start
the pppd, I check the ppp0 by using 'ifconfig', I got the following
information:

ppp0: Local 192.168.0.3, P-T-P 135.3.224.3

and checked the routing table and found the default route is
go through the ppp link.

I can ping the ppp server 135.3.224.3, but cannot go any furthur.
I can not reach any DNS server. I am sure the DNS setting is
correct. Is this because the local IP address
of the ppp link is assigned as 192.168.0.3?

I checked the log of dialup, actually the ppp server dynamiclly assigned

a IP address for my linux box, but I don't know how to modify the script

of ppp to use this assigned IP address, any idea about this?

Thanks,

Ruibing

Check your /etc/hosts file of the computer that connect to the net via ppp0
and delete the entry for itself
 e.g
your_machine_name    192.168.0.3

that how I fix mine. I am sure there is a better way, but sofar this works.

Good luck, Hien.

Yes.  Adding the pppd noipdefault option should make it work correctly.
Read man pppd for details.

exactly what did
route -n
say? It should have said
0.0.0.0   135.3.224.3 ........ ppp0
Did it?

...

If it dynamically assigned one then ppp would have used it.

Posting  actual messages  from your system when you are confused is more
likely to find help  than is posting your interpretation of them.

IP address for connecting into LRA through ppp

Thanks to Cliff, adding the noipdefault options to pppd works. I used to
remove the host name and ip address off the /etc/hosts to avoid ppp to get
the local IP address, but this option is right way to do it. just edit your
/etc/ppp/options files and add noipdefault to it.

Cheers, Hien.

1. PPP PAP connect fails after giving IP addresses

[ Tonews 2K ]
I've been trying to log into a system that uses PAP authentication
and (sigh), it appears their directions are wrong, someone kindly
suggested dropping the +ua authfile command and when I did I managed
to get some IP numbers out, but after that nothing:

Jun  4 17:02:05 drt3 pppd[905]: Serial connection established.
Jun  4 17:02:06 drt3 pppd[905]: Using interface ppp0

ifconfig gave this, meaning I think there is some sort of communication
going on:

I hope somebody can help.

Thanks in advance,
