Problems with "xdm" in RedHat 5.1 Linux

Post by Phillip Solta » Thu, 01 Oct 1998 04:00:00

I was wondering if anyone else was trying to use "xdm" in the
RedHat 5.1 linux.  It has only worked when logging into the computer
that is running "xdm" from its console.  I can't get it to broadcast its
availability as an "X Client" or get the chooser to see any other "X
Clients".  I'm using the default settings in the /etc/X11/xdm directory.

Thanks,

Edit the Xaccess file in /etc/X11/xdm - there should be a line with
just an asterisk, and a comment "any host can get a login window" - be
sure this is commented out.

There are some below - CHOOSER BROADCAST, etc.  Be sure these all have
asterisks in column 1 and they're not commented out.

On your X server, either use XDCMP Broadcast or Direct query.  You may
have to enter some config stuff for your host, but it should be fairly
self-explanatory.

Hope that helps.

1. What is difference between "xdm" and "xdm -nodaemon" ?

Hello !

I have tried both "xdm" and "xdm -nodaemon" in /etc/inittab and also run "xdm" and "xdm -nodaemon"
under bash. And I checked the processes in memory when running "xdm" and "xdm -nodaemon".
However, I cannot find  any difference when using them. I read "man xdm" but it cannot explain
me in detail with examples.

Can anyone tell me what is difference between "xdm" and "xdm -nodaemon" in detail with some examples ?

Thanks for your help !!!
