PS: I'm looking for a perl program to do this. I've seen it , but I cant

Shouldn't be too hard, look at the sources of wakelan.

1. magic ping / wake-on-lan

Dunno, I understood it this way:
you tell the bios to do wake on LAN. Then when you send any packet to the host,
proper IP/MAC adress given, the network card generates and IRQ and thus wakes the
machine ...
So a ping should work, as long as you can figure out or know the proper MAC
adress of the card. You can add MAC's using arp -s <IP> <MAC> to let you linux know
what MAC is on what IP, sort of cuts down in traffic and may help for this solution :-)
