Unable to establish connection using ethernet with pppd ...

Post by Irumbo Mateen » Tue, 20 Mar 2001 07:41:41

I am trying to get my internet connection working on linux I have a DSL
line and connect primarily thru Win98 but would like to do so as well
with linux my OS of choice ...

This is what I have done so far:

1. installed kernel 2.4
2. downloaded the latest version of pppd version 2.4
3. rebuilt my kernel and recompiled pppd  ( reason I did this was my
prev. version of pppd was not working made a lot of progress with this
one ...
4. My ethernet card is Network Everywhere NC100 v2, I have the drivers
for it and linux detects the card ..
5. downloaded pppoe driver provided by my isp and set it up the way they
requested ..
6. My provider uses PPP and provides an IP address ..
7. The pppoe driver I downloaded asked me to use PAP and CHAP so I
enetered my userid / password in both the pap and chap secrets file.
8. when I initially fire up ifconfig I only have my loopback device
showing, wneh I add eth0 I see 2 devices ...
9.  what do the messages below mean, where can I learn more about what
is going on here <see data dump from pppd session>

below is a data dump of what pppd shows with debug switched on:

This all looks pratically identical to what I see at dialup...

...but right here you're *sending* PAP stuff, and I'm *receiving* CHAP stuff.

Have you tried CHAP?

ps: I hate to be a bummer, but I'd *never* put my actual account name
in a Usenet post.

I hope your password is *real* secure, because you've just given the world
one-half of what it needs to access your account...

And remember: it's spelled l-i-n-u-x, but it's pronounced "Linux"

Unable to establish connection using ethernet with pppd ...

Post by Irumbo Mateen » Wed, 21 Mar 2001 11:21:00

Thanx for te advice, I'll keep that in mind next time..

1. What packets cause pppd to establish a connection using the demand option?

Using ppp version 2.3.2, what causes pppd to establish a connection
when the demand option is used?  Ping seems to, but neither invoking
fetchmail nor sendmail -q (when it is operating in deferred delivery mode)
does it?  I need the link up so that fetchmail will not skip polling my
ISP,
and so that sendmail can transfer outgoing mail.

Thanks,
Darrell Shane
