old 8088 as terminal

Post by Elias Pin » Mon, 30 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Hi,
I've got this 8088 sitting in my ba*t collecting dust.
Is there a way of making it a terminal for linux?

does anyone know any FAQ, HOWTO or even URL on the subject?

One more question... if I was to connect both of them, what type
or cable?

thanks, Elias

Yes, there are a number of DOS comms programs out there which will do the
popular terminal emulations (not that I can think of any right now !).  You
could set up a straight serial <> getty link, or run slattach and NCSA
telnet if you wanted to.

Try the serial how-to, I think there is some  information on setting up
getty's for terminals in there.

You will probably find that there are commented out entries in /etc/inittab
for serial terminal attachment.  Try having a look at that and the man
page(s) for getty.

Most likely you will require a null modem cable.

Cheers, Ian.

Use any terminal program (Procomm, Qmodem, Comit, etc.) and a null modem
cable.  I used to do the same thing, then I trashed the 8088 for a old
used WYSE terminal.  The WYSE is a LOT smaller on my desk!!! :-)
