Netscape and Plug-ins

: Anyone managed to get Netscape 3.0 working with plug-ins? Although the
: docs say Linux is not supported, the code seems to be in the program,
: and the libnullplugin.so is included in the kit.

Although  libnullplugin.so is included, it does not appear to be used. If it
was, a link to "about:plugins" (Yes, it's Netscape's internal transfer
protocol) would display some information about the null plugin.

I attempted to build the libtextplugin.so from the SDK, but as far as I can
tell it's being ignored. On SGI, for instance, if you setenv NPX_PLUGIN_PATH
to somewhere, Netscape attempts to load all files in that directory
as plugins (and generates a zillion error messages), but on Linux nada.

.... if it does get implemented, it might be feasible to make a generic
tool to use .mailcap to launch existing helper app.s, such as
RealAudio, VRweb, Xpdf, wavplay etc. so that when someone uses an EMBED tag
we at least see something, even if it doesn't appear in the Netscape window.

The plugin SDK requires Motif.

Actually, if you run strace, you'll see that netscape is actually
scanning the relevant directories, but it doesn't do anything with the
filenames that it gets...maybe in the next version...
