Weird ethernet card problem

Post by adrie » Sun, 01 Apr 2001 09:43:04

Hi you all.

I have a strange problem with my ethernet PCMCIA card.

Here's the whole story:

I use a Linksys PCM100 10/100 EtherFast PCMCIA ethernet card, wich I
bought because it was sold with a Linux distribution. I don't care about
the free Linux distribution.... I just  made me think the card was linux
supported.

This card is used as an interface between my Compaq 1210 pentium laptop
and my (new) cable modem.

When I just put the card into the PCMCIA slot, it didn't work. So I
changed a few settings in LinuxConf.

-->Client Tasks
---> Adaptor 1 enabled
---> dchp, eth0.

And now it does work. Or kind of..... it's really slow. as about a 56k
modem....

I swapped the card for a Xircom one and it suddenly turned my internet
connection into a lightspeed transfert path. So I guess the problem is
the Linksys card in itself. Or a bad network setup????

Anyone got an idea?

cause my ISP email is out of order.....

Thanks a lot

Dominic.

How about looking at your system log to see if there are any error
messages when you use the Linksys card?

How updated is you pcmcia modules?  Some of the linksys cards require VERY
up to date software.

All the pcmcia stuff is from RH7. I tried to switch to the more up to date
pcmcia-cs available, but that just made my ethernet card not working at
all.... not even recognize as a pcmcia card. Go figure! Well maybe it as the
right thing to do, with a little configuration check. But I read a lot of
FAQS and howtos these days about networking and such but i'm getting a little
confused... that's why i'm now asking for help!

No, there's something else wrong with your setup.  I'm running a
out-of-the-box RH 7.0 (upgraded to kernel 2.2.17, but it worked with
the stock kernel as well) distribution on a Dell Latitude CPtV and
have had no problems at all getting a Linksys PCM100 card to work as a
modem and ethernet card.

Check your bios settings and see if you may have a device that's
interfering with the pcmcia or any of your serial ports.

1. Please help with a "Weird" problem on 2nd Ethernet Card.

I have a Red Hat 4.1 Linux (with 2.0.30 kernels) box setup with one
ethernet card and a modem. It uses diald to connect to the internet
and evrything works fine.

I added a second ethernet card and gave it a totally seperate IP
address (different Class, even) and now, if I try to ping any
of the machines on our network (from the linux box) it times-out.
Also, i can't ping the linux box from a workstation. I can still
out to the internet from the Linux box. Here is the "WEIRDEST"
part: If I plug the second ethernet card into opur hub, the
ping goes through. If I plug the second ethernet card into a
unused Hub, the ping times-out just like when it isn't plugged
into anything. My routes and IP Masquerading haven't changed since
I installed the new ethernet card...any ideas? This one is driving
me crazy.
