network monitor/watcher

Post by Richard Shephe » Tue, 14 May 1996 04:00:00

Hi linuxers:

Is there a program for monitoring/watching machines/routers/hosts on networks
such as the windoze program ws_watch?  I am required to run such a program
and would much rather run a linux version (on a decent PC) than a windoze
version (currently running on a very under-powered PC).

I have looked around a little but cannot determine from the readme's whether
given programs do what I want.  In particular I have come across gobbler,
gobbleview.  Before spending much money on ftp I would like to hear from
anyone else who may have already been down this path.

Cheers,

I don't know about ws_watch... is it a sniffer, or a little bit more, like snmp
manager ?

- if you just want to look at all thos nifty packets running along the
  ethernet... get tcpdump
- if you want to do real management (using snmp), get tkined+scotty from sunsite,
it's rather big, but it's the best application I've found for linux... (all styles !)

gobbler is for DOS/packet drivers. gobbleview is only a little program to help you
decode ethernet dumps made with the DOS sniffer

ws_watch is a program for Windows.  You can graphically show the layout of your network, including routers, systems, etc.

ws_watch will then ping all the systems on the network every few minutes.  If the system is up, its grahical representation turns green.  If it is down, it turns red.  Then, depending on whether the system is designated as a server, workstation, etc, an alarm sounds.

1. Bandwidth Watcher/Monitor Help/Info Needed

I run a Redhat 5.2 server and have it co-located elsewhere. My
provider has now decided to get slick and bill for bandwidth usage.
However my web stat program and their usage stats don't agree. I was
told this by my provider

"We run a bay networks ethernet switch, which allows us to snmp poll
each 'ethernet port' every 5 minutes, and generate statistics for your
server. We monitor bandwith into, and out of, your server and tally it
up."

My question is how or where do I find a program, perferably RPM based,
to monitor  my bandwidth usage at my eithernet card.
