DELL Inspiron 7500 / RH6.1 / 3COM 3C589 Problems

Post by Donald Brad » Sun, 26 Dec 1999 04:00:00

I have a new (about a month old) DELL Inspiron 7500. I have just
installed RH6.1, rebuilt the kernel to give frame buffer support and
got X windows working in 1024x768 mode.

Next problem: I have a 3com 3c589 nic card in the machine. The
hardware seems to working fine i.e. I can ping my dns server
(192.168.0.1, a tecra 730cdt running RH6.0 in a NAT config) and any
other machine on my network by ip but not by name. Whats baffling me
is that I cannot ping machines NOT on my network by IP. i.e ping
17.254.0.91 comes back with Network is unreachable. All other machines
on my betwork can ping the new addition by name.

Even worse when I type nslookup I get:

*** Can't find server name for address 192.168.0.1: Non-existant
    host/domain

I think something is whacked with my config but I can't spot what it
is for the life of me.

Any help much appreciated.

OK

I got the networking working by removing the network from run levels 2
and 3. This allows the pcmcia to startup successfully before
networking attempts a startup.

I will summarize my efforts in setting up this machine on
comp.os.linux.setup.

Thanks
