pppd 8 bit clean error when the ISP is 8 bit clean

pppd 8 bit clean error when the ISP is 8 bit clean

Post by Michael Chapli » Tue, 28 Jan 1997 04:00:00

My ISP (Bellatlantic) offers PPP protocol and I can hook up no problem
with Windows 95. But when I try to connect with a chat script via PPPD,
I get a message after PAP authentcation (while it tries to negotiate
communication parameters) saying the recieving serial line is not 8 bit
clean (7 bit is 1). What is going on? Bell Atlantic says the line is 8
bit clean (8N1), yet the PPPD doesn't see it that way. I thought PPPD
sets the serial port to 8N1, de riguer. Do I need to explicitly set the
serial port to 8N1 nbefore I connect?

See the PPP How to - it covers this error.

Your ISP is sending a text screen before "username:", for example:

**************************************
**************************************
Welcome to the Fantastic Bell Atlantic

         Internet Service!!

**************************************

Username:

pppd detects all these 7 bit ascii characters while looking for
8bit LCP packets.  I suggest that you use minicomm or kermit or
whatever and call up the ISP PoP to determine exactly what the last
line of the text is.  Then modify your chat script to wait for it.

PPP config Problems
Sorry peeps, but I wonder if someone could give me a hand..? I'v been
trying to get the PPPD up and running on my box, and have so far
failed miserably. The main problem is I can't see what is failing, so
I don't know how to put it right.

I'm using a chat script to dial. This works OK. Dials, connects,
authenticates, and I get the message 'Connected'.
BUT, thats it. I cannot ping. Then, about a minute later, I'm
disconnected.

Looking in /var/log, I have...
        PPP 2.2.0 started
        Serial connection established (using PPP0)
        Connect: PPP0 <--> /dev/modem
        Sent [LCP ConfReq id 0x1 <mru 1500> <asyncmap 0x20a0000>
                magic 0x757b7a10 <pcomp> <accomp> ]
        Last message repeated 9 times
        LCP: timeout sending Config-Requests
        Connection terminated
Receive serial link is not 8 bit clean:
Problem: all had bit 7 set to 0
        Exit

What am I missing, and how do I put it right?

TIA
