NIS help needed (ypserv refuses ypbind request)

Post by David J. Toppe » Fri, 05 Jun 1998 04:00:00

I should preface this (even though it will soon be obvious perhaps) that
I've never set up NIS before.

But I've read the HOWTO, and the man pages it points me to (grr...), and
the article in this month's Linux journal.  I can't seem to get basic
NIS running.

I've downloaded the latest ypserv (1.3.1) and ypbind (3.3) and whatever
else I needed (can't recall off hand).

In my most recent setup attempt, I manually edited the Makefile in
/var/yp adding a DOMAIN variable.  So I recompile and re-run ypinit -m
(same thing no?).  I did this because previously it compiled for
(none).  I was able to connect with ypbind from the server (eg.,
localhost).  I took that out thinking that it was causing the problem
below.  I was wrong.

I also added a line to /var/yp/securenets to try and "force" the darn
thing.  No dice.

I've also set domainname too ... still no dice.

When I try ypserv -d to see what's going on ... then run ypbind on a
client machine.  I get:

[Welcome to the NYS YP Server, version 1.3.1 (with securenets)]
Find securenet: 255.0.0.0 127.0.0.0
Find securenet: 255.255.255.0 128.143.140.12
ypserv.conf: dns: 1
ypproc_domain("music.*ia.edu") [From: 128.143.140.12:841]
refused connect from 128.143.140.12
-> Ignored (not a valid source host)
        -> Not served by us.

anyone have any ideas?  It's beyond me.

Thanks,

DT

I think you have read the NIS HOWTO ? You need to set a DOMAINNAME with
/bin/domainname, and NOT to edit the Makefile !!!!
ypbind doesn't query the /var/yp/Makefile, it uses the same function
as /bin/domainname uses. "(none)" is no valid domainname it will make
a lot of problems !

Because your /var/yp/securenets file is wrong.
host 128.143.140.12 with netmask 255.255.255.0 gives 128.143.140.0, not
128.143.140.12. If only the 12 should be allowed to connect to
ypserv, you need the "host 128.143.140.12" line. Please read the
ypserv manual pages. For this, I have writtem then.

Linux is like a Vorlon.  It is incredibly powerful, gives terse,
cryptic answers and has a lot of things going on in the background.

1. ypbind ypbind ypbind ypbind ypbind - HELP?

I posted a message earlier about this topic and finally got it to work, but
now there's another small but very annoying problem with it.

I have linux on a 486-50 with a 3com 3c503 with 16M ram.

First:  I have no problems with NIS now.

The problem is that after I start up ypbind and get it connected to the NIS
server, it continuously fills up the syslog with the following message:

broadcast: RPC: Unable to receive ( Network unreachable )

After turning off the syslogd, I new get these all over my screen.  What's
strange is that everything works great - except this error message.  Another
thing I noticed is that when I do an 'ifconfig', the HW addr is all 0's.
I cant figure out why the network stuff is up and running yet the HW addr is
messed up and the ypbind daemon is acting up...

I did select the correct net driver and recompiled the kernel, which did not
help.  Any suggestions or ideas?

Thanx,

Al

2. There is a non fatal but annoying bug in natsemi driver of 2.4.18 kernel: ifconfig doesn`t show collinsions. It only gives 0.

3. NIS ypbind/ypserv can't register with portmapper

4. error compiling kernel after upgraded to gcc 2.7.0 and elf lib 5.0.9

5. NIS ypserv/ypbind registration ?

11. NIS setup: ypbind getting connection refused

12. NIS: ypserv 1.99.0 rejects ypserv.conf
